Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin (2010) by Duncan Tonatiuh.
Kids who have immigrated to the U.S. or those with immigrant parents usually have family members living far away, back in the motherland. Letters, photos and phone calls (maybe Skype these days) can help, but nothing can beat a real visit.
Dear Primo follows two cousins, Carlitos in Mexico and Charlie in the U.S., as they write letters back and forth detailing their lives. Carlitos plays futbol; Charile plays basketball. Carlitos loves quesadillas; Charlie loves pizza. [Spoiler Alert!] But finally after all the letter writing, the two cousins figure out that visiting each other is the only way to really each other.

Our children are gorgeously diverse and they love a good read.

Here, I feature authors and illustrators that are building a new diverse canon, book by dazzling book.

Some of my favorite themes include: children of color, LGBTQ, adoption, special needs, math, and science. There is also a mishmash of miscellany and reblogged tidbits that strike my fancy as they float by.
