Our children are gorgeously diverse and they love a good read. At the heart of Real Kids/ Good Books are authors and illustrators who are building a new diverse canon, book by dazzling book.

Themes include: children of color, LGBTQ, adoption, special needs, math, science and writing. And of course there is also a mishmash of miscellany and reblogged tidbits that strike my fancy as they float by.

Thanks for stopping by.

Underground (2011) by Shane W. Evans.
Seizing Freedom. That’s is exactly what Shane Evan’s book, Underground, depicts in pared down pictures and words. There are numerous picture books that deal with the history of slavery and the underground railroad. This book is the simplest one I’ve found to introduce to young children. There is a longer afterword that will help older children and adults fill in the spaces with more concrete information.
