Alvin Ho: Allergic to Dead Bodies, Funerals, and Other Fatal Circumstances by Lenore Look, illustrated by LeUyen Pham (Schwartz and Wade, 2011).
Alvin Ho is one of my favorite guys in the kids lit world. He’s still in second grade. He’s still scared of everything. He still doesn’t say a peep at school. But this time when his gunggung’s best friend Charlie unexpectedly dies, Alvin offers to go to the funeral with his grandpa, before he’s given any thought to the creepy dead body that will be there too.
Luckily in Alvin’s world there are funny mix-ups that lead into more hilarious mix-ups, but at the heart of this book is a young kid trying to understand death in his own bouncy-skittish way.
